International Women’s Day 2026: Why Education, Food and Healthcare Matter for Girls

Every year on 8 March, the world marks International Women's Day, a global moment to celebrate the achievements of women and to call for equality and justice. In 2026, the United Nations theme is “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls.”

The theme highlights a simple truth: rights only matter when they are protected and when real action is taken to ensure women and girls can live safe, healthy and empowered lives. Across the world, women still hold only around 64 percent of the legal rights available to men, meaning inequality continues to shape everyday life for millions of girls.

For girls growing up in fragile and conflict-affected regions such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, the gap between rights and reality can be enormous.

The Reality Many Girls Face

In many communities affected by poverty and conflict, girls’ futures can be determined by factors far beyond their control.

Families struggling to survive often face impossible choices. When food is scarce and income is uncertain, children may be pulled out of school to help support the family. Healthcare may be delayed because it is unaffordable. Education becomes a luxury instead of a right.

These conditions affect girls especially deeply. Without access to education and basic healthcare, girls have fewer opportunities to shape their own futures.

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to break cycles of poverty. A girl who can attend school regularly gains knowledge, confidence, and choices. She is more likely to build a stable livelihood, protect her health, and support her own family in the future.

But education does not stand alone. It is closely connected to two other essentials: nutrition and healthcare.

A child who is hungry cannot concentrate in school. A child suffering from untreated illness cannot attend regularly. Basic food and healthcare are not separate issues from education. They are part of the same foundation.

Why Child Sponsorship Matters

This is where child sponsorship becomes life-changing.

Through programmes like those supported by Lily for the Congo, sponsoring a child helps provide stability where there would otherwise be uncertainty. School fees can be paid. Books and uniforms can be provided. Families gain reassurance that their children have support.

For many children, the difference is simple but profound: the chance to remain in school.

When someone chooses to sponsor a child in Africa, they are not just helping with education. They are helping protect childhood itself.

They are helping ensure that girls grow up with the freedom to imagine futures beyond survival.

Supporting Girls Means Supporting Communities

When girls receive an education and basic support, the benefits ripple outward.

Educated girls grow into women who contribute to their communities. They are more likely to become teachers, nurses, entrepreneurs and leaders. They are also more likely to ensure their own children receive education and healthcare.

In this way, supporting one girl can strengthen an entire community.

This is why International Women’s Day is not only about celebrating achievements. It is also about recognising the work still needed to ensure that every girl, everywhere, has the same opportunities to thrive.

Is International Women's Day just a meme, or could you contribute to change?

The theme “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls” reminds us that change requires participation from all of us.

Rights must be backed by action.

If you are looking for a meaningful way to make a difference, consider child sponsorship. Choosing to sponsor a child in Africa helps provide education, stability, food and healthcare for children who would otherwise face overwhelming barriers.

At Lily for the Congo, we see every day how sponsoring a child changes lives. It opens doors that once seemed closed and gives girls the opportunity to grow into strong, capable women with choices for their future.

This International Women’s Day, we invite you to be part of that change.

👉 Sponsor a child today and help build a future where every girl has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.
